I am lucky enough to have a shop near me that sells ripe bananas. The local cafes buy them from him so he always has lots. They are great for smoothies as they are easier to digest and they contain higher levels of antioxidants than less ripe ones. Really ripe bananas also have anti-cancer properties, taking on abnormal cells with a substance called TNF. The downside to using ripe bananas is the slight loss of vitamins and minerals during the ripening process, and the higher sugar content. I counteract this higher sugar content by not adding any other form of sweetener to the smoothie.
- 2 very ripe bananas
- 3 cups unsweetened nut milk (I used cashew)
- 1 cup frozen berries
- 1 tbsp flax seeds
- More water if needed.
